The Origin: Papua New Guinea
PNG is one of the world's most unique and underrepresented coffee origins. Grown primarily in the Highlands at elevation between 1,500-2,000 meters above sea level, PNG coffee develop exceptional complexity and clarity.
The country's volcanic soil, tropical climate, and traditional smallholder farming practices create coffee that is:
Bright and structured
Floral, Bourbon and fruit-forward
Clean and vibrant acidity
Balanced with spice and natural sweetness
Most farms, around 85% in PNG are small, family operated plots. They are often less than a few hectares where coffee is hand-picked and carefully processed.
Why Papua New Guinea?
Papua New Guinea accounts for approximately 1% of global coffee production, and historically contributes well under 1% of total UK coffee imports.
Production in PNG is largely smallholder-based, with thousands of independent farmers cultivating coffee on small family plots across the Highlands. This decentralised structure, combined with the country’s remote geography and distance from major consuming markets, has limited large scale commercial export compared to origins such as Brazil or Vietnam.
Sea freight from PNG to the UK can take 42-56 days, and global shipping routes naturally prioritise higher volume markets. As a result, PNG remains one of the most distinctive yet underrepresented origins in the UK.
At Bru House, we see this not as a limitation but as an opportunity.
By focusing specifically on bringing Papua New Guinea coffee into the UK market, we are working to increase availability, strengthen supply consistency, and introduce more roasters to the unique character of this origin.
